This was my first time ever using Maya. Over the Summer holidays, I experimented with using blender to get used to how 3D software works. I managed to create a pretty nice looking donut, which honestly pairs well with this mug.
But Maya was slightly different – control and usage wise. The controls were strange to get used to at first, but after awhile they felt fairly natural and it was easy and smooth to move the camera around. As for the practical use of Maya, it is much more focused on the sole objective of 3D modelling. Blender is like those takeaways that sell Burgers, Pizzas, Kebabs etc. – all of which are fine, but it doesn’t excel at any specific one. By this, I mean Blender does it all (modelling, sculpting, animation etc.), whereas Maya is much more specialised and leaves jobs such as sculpting to programs like ZBrush and Mudbox.
My first attempt at making anything in Maya was the mug. It went fairly smoothly apart from right at the start, when I extruded to make the mug thicker, the cylinder mesh would break. I later discovered that this was caused by Ngons – a face or polygon that is made up of five or more sides or edges connected by five or more vertices.
This was the final result. The mug looks ok, however if I were to change anything I would probably tweak the handle slightly. As this was my first time using Maya, the main point of this exercise was to get used to the program itself, in which I believe I was successful.
