Perspective Drawing

This was my first time drawing in one point perspective, or perspective in general. I didn’t want to do a simple one point perspective piece with the vanishing point being directly in the middle of the horizon line. I set out to challenge myself by moving the vanishing point to the left, and by including broken buildings. To do this, I thought an apocalyptic setting would be fitting.

I started off by using the line tool to map out the horizon line (in blue) and the positions of the buildings. This was my first time using the line tool in photoshop. My favourite feature of it is the degrees feature, which makes it easy and effective to draw straight lines.

The most challenging aspect of this piece was most definitely making the broken buildings stay in perspective with the other buildings. For the building on the right hand side, you can see the back wall of it as well, meaning it had to be in perspective. It took a lot of trial and error to get both buildings looking correct as the broken off parts can mess with the eye and make the viewer think it is not in perspective.

In my opinion, the road is what really gives the illusion of perspective in this piece, with the white lines getting smaller and smaller as they reach the vanishing point.

Another challenge was writing in perspective. To do this I had to first create guidelines in perspective to then write in.

To finish this piece off, I added three zombies. The main one being the zombie in the foreground. I added him to give more interest to the piece and to make it more dynamic. I added the red blood as a contrast to the grey theme of the road, zombies and buildings.

Throughout the piece, I used layers effectively, creating new layers for each building, the road etc. I also grouped lines together for the left hand and right hand side perspective guidelines.

For this piece I used a soft brush to paint everything. Whilst it does give everything a hand painted look, perhaps using a fill bucket for the buildings would have been much quicker and saved me a lot of time.
