Facial Expressions

For the facial expressions exercise, I wanted to understand what changes in the face occur when different emotions are shown. To do this, I traced images of people showing emotions such as happiness, sadness and anger.

In both of the happy references, the mouth goes upwards and creates a crease that connects with the nose. The eyebrows are usually slightly lifted and the eyes slightly squinted.

For sadness, the eyebrows point upwards, the lips have a lot of tension in them (especially when holding back tears) and there are creases around the nose and forehead.

For anger, the eyebrows point downwards and scrunch towards the nose. The reference was also pouting slightly, which isn’t always the case for anger. Perhaps I could have studied another reference for anger that isn’t pouting for comparison.

The image on the left is my work before I changed the colour of the faces to match the emotion, and on the right is afterwards.

I achieved this by watching PHLEARN’s video on how to change the colour of things in photoshop. I first created a HUE/Saturation layer and then colour picked the grey I had used. I then adjusted the colour, however that adjusted it for them all (since they are all the same colour). To fix this I used a layer mask and painted over the faces I did not want to change the colour of. I repeated this process three times (once for each colour).

Here, you can see the layer mask and the black I painted in over the various faces.
